Easter Reflection
If not my absolute favorite, then Easter is definitely one of my favorite days of the year. There is just so much to celebrate! So much joy is mine because of what happened in history over 2000 years ago. Wow. It's hard to fathom that long span of time. Nevertheless, what I celebrate today has been bringing joy to thousands for all of these years.
It's hard for me to put into words all that I think about on Easter. It's a day that usually involves tears and exultant singing, quiet reflection and much rejoicing. It's a day that stirs the jubilant longing of my heart. For although every day is a day to remember the abundant life I have because of my Savior's sacrifice, Easter is an awesome reminder of just how much He did for me.
If I could go back to anytime in history, I think I'd go back to that first "Easter" weekend. I wonder what it would have been like. (You can see my musings on some of that from about a year ago here: Hope Woven Through the Dark)
To stand by the cross watching this man I'd put my hope in die. Darkness covering the earth as He willingly accepted His Father's wrath...what would that have felt like? I can only imagine the darkness covering the earth went deeper than the eyes. And as the disciples hid for fear of being persecuted in the days following His death...the darkness and dread in their hearts must have been so deep, overwhelming, and raw.
To be Mary, weeping at not having the chance to anoint this beloved One once more, only to have Him suddenly speak. What shock! What ecstasy!
Or to be Thomas, and touch Christ's nail pierced hands.
Yet blessed are those who have seen not, but believe. And I do believe!
Christ the Lord died. He accepted the weight and pain of all this world's sin, and as the Father poured out holy wrath on Him, how His heart must have broken. I weep on Easter for the pain of my Beloved Savior.
But He didn't stay dead! Easter morning, the Conqueror of all death and sin came back to life. Only God fully knew the power of a sinless sacrifice. And now, blessed now, because of His death and new life, I have abundant life. My life is hidden with Christ in God! (Col. 3) I rejoice on Easter for the blessedness of Life in the presence of the One who loves me perfectly.
Oh rejoice, be glad, and sing! For Jesus Christ, the beloved Son of God, was dead...but now HE LIVES!
